March 28, 2020 - CANCELED DUE TO COVID19

Due to the COVID19 outbreak and the limitations on gathering size, the 2020 Maintain Your Brain Battle of the Bands was canceled. At the time the event was canceled, it had already raised over $11,000 from nearly 100 generous supporters.
In 2019, we hosted the first annual Maintain Your Brain Battle of the Bands! Through the generous support of our sponsors and fans and attendees, the event raised over $22,000 for the Triangle Aphasia Project! Attended by more than 300 people, the first event was a complete success. Held on the grounds of Broughton High School from 1-4p, the community event featured student musical talent (pop, rock, hip hop, folk and more) including six bands with students from nine different Wake County High Schools. The GRAND PRIZE WINNER was The Buzzards Band from Holly Springs High School They will open for a headliner of similar genre at Raleigh’s famous Lincoln Theatre. Food Trucks were available! Topic related booths included Dementia Alliance, Gfeller Concussion Center at UNC, Duke Sports Concussion Center, Wake Med Concussion Program, Poe Center, Brain Injury Association of NC (BIANC) and the Triangle Aphasia Project were on hand to demonstrate some of the amazing resources we have right here in the Triangle.

My name is Charlotte Fullbright and I am a junior at Broughton High School. With a maternal grandfather affected by a brain hemorrhage stroke, and a history of dementia in my family, I have a personal connection to the subject of neurological health. As an athlete on the varsity volleyball and basketball teams, I am well aware of the focus on prevention and treatment of concussion. Research is ongoing to identify ways to prevent and treat neurological disorders.
With the assistance of other Broughton and Wake County High School student leaders, I am excited about the opportunity to help!
This year, the Maintain Your Brain Battle of the Bands will raise funds for the Triangle Aphasia Project. "Imagine there’s a file cabinet in your head. In it is stored all the words you know and love and use to communicate daily, with everyone, about everything. They’re all in place, each organized by its grammatical nuances and ready to grab and speak, read or write.
Suddenly, though, the file cabinet tips over, scattering all the words you know and love and use onto the floor in front of you, disorganized and unreachable. Cognitively, you’re intact. So is your intellect. You know what you want to say and how you should say it, but you can’t access the right words in the right way to utter the words, or sometimes read or write them.
That’s what it’s like for someone who rises from a stroke or other brain injury with aphasia, a mild to severe communication disorder that disrupts a person’s ability to use or understand words, said speech pathologist Maura English Silverman, founder and executive director of Triangle Aphasia Project, or TAP."
